Constraint Is a Vessel

A constraint is often described as something imposed on a poem from outside. But once writing begins, the rule moves inward and starts producing thoughts of its own.
The unavailable word creates pressure. The detour becomes voice.
What matters is not difficulty for its own sake, but the new language that difficulty makes necessary.
